The Hollywood Reporter writes that REVOLUTION's Giancarlo Esposito has signed on for THE SCORCH TRIALS -- sequel to THE MAZE RUNNER -- helmed by Wes Ball and starring Dylan O'Brien.
In the first film, when Thomas (O'Brien) wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape. Based on the best-selling novel by James Dashner, the film also stars Kaya Scodelario, Aml Ameen, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Will Poulter.
Esposito will play 'Jorge', who is "a leader of a group of survivors known as the Cranks that encounter the group of teens led by O'Brien." GAME OF THRONES star Aidan Gillen also just joined the cast and will portray the villain.
The studio greenlit THE MAZE RUNNER's sequel just days after the first opened in theaters last weekend. The film took the top spot at the weekend box office, with $32.5 million domestically.
THE MAZE RUNNER sequel will hit theaters on September 18th, 2015.
Esposito's upcoming big screen projects include Poker Night, the musical drama Stuck and Disney's live-action Jungle Book. Known for his role in the cult series Breaking Bad, he currently stars in the TV dramas Revolution and Once Upon a Time.
