ADIR 26 FILMS announces the launch of its Kickstarter campaign for "Reefa" (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/reefathemovie/reefa) starringJeffrey Wahlberg, and the greenlight for production of its independent film starting in March 2019 with an expected launch date of Fall 2019.
The independent drama tells the true story of Israel "Reefa" Hernandez, an 18-year-old Colombian immigrant and art prodigy whose family had moved to Miami on an asylum visa to escape the intensifying threats they were facing back home in Baranquilla. After graduating from Miami Beach Senior High School in 2013, having won many accolades for his artwork, Israel was looking forward to his last summer in Miami with family and friends; painting, skateboarding, and enjoying being a kid before moving to New York City on an art scholarship, when tragedy struck. On August 5, 2013, Israel decided to spray paint his last wall which he hoped would command immediate respect from his peers. There, Miami Beach police officers chased down, beat, and eventually killed him using a taser with excessive force. The United Nations Committee Against Torture is currently examining the case of Israel Hernandez. To view a Kickstarter short preview of the movie, click here: https://vimeo.com/301967658
Actor Jeffrey Wahlberg is slated to star as the young artist Israel "Reefa" Hernandez in Reefa. Wahlberg is best known for "Future World" (2018), the indie action movie co-directed by James Franco. He is also currently starring alongside James Franco and Rashida Jones in "Don't Come Back from the Moon" (2019). The 22-year-old Miami native will next star alongside Eva Longoria, Michael Peña, and Benicio Del Toro as Diego in the live-action film adaptation of "Dora The Explorer" (2019). He is represented by Innovative Artists, LEVERAGE Management and attorney Jonathan Sauer.
Director Jessica Kavana Dornbusch, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University's film school and later moved to New York City at the peak of the indie film movement, has won various accolades for her work, including "Love and Debate" (2006) based on her experiences as a debate champion. "Love and Debate" became Kavana Dornbusch's feature film debut as writer and director (starring Sean Astin, Bryan Greenberg, and Adam Rodriguez). The film won several accolades and was acquired for worldwide distribution. Jessica's next films "Escape" (2012) showcased at major film festivals, won awards for Best Director, and "Snap" (2015), starring Simon Rex and produced by Seth Browarnik, examined the conflicted life of a paparazzi photographer, were also made-in-Miami productions.: Dornbusch stated: "From the moment I first heard Israel's story I knew it was a story that had to be told. Latino and immigrant stories are very under-represented, and combine that all of the other elements of Israel's life - his magnificent artwork, his beautiful relationship with his family, and the fact that this all happened on a street I have passed millions of times, and I knew I had to be THE ONE to tell this story."
