Principal photography has begun on RKO Pictures' action comedy "Barely Lethal," which is being produced by Main Street Films, Hopscotch Pictures and RatPac Entertainment and directed by Kyle Newman.
Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit," "Ender's Game"), Jessica Alba ("Sin City," "Machete Kills"), Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson ("Django Unchained," "Pulp Fiction"), and Sophie Turner, currently co-starring in HBO's celebrated series "Game of Thrones" are set to star.
"Barely Lethal" marks the first of a new slate of films being produced for release by Main Street Films. "We want to partner with quality filmmakers and work with them to secure the biggest possible audience during the filmmaking process," said Craig Chang, Chairman of Main Street Films. "We truly see Main Street Films as a working part of the whole filmmaking process, not just as a buyer. We look to take responsibility for the future success of all of our films by making an early investment and supporting them the entire way."
In "Barely Lethal," Hailee Steinfeld plays 'Megan', a young international assassin who yearns for a "normal" adolescence, prompting her to fake her own death and enroll in a suburban high school. Jessica Alba plays 'Victoria', Megan's former handler and current nemesis, who enlists 'Heather', played by Sophie Turner, to go undercover at the High School and reacquire the runaway. Samuel L. Jackson portrays Megan's mentor, 'Hardman'.
"It's a very intriguing project because on the surface it's an action comedy, but it becomes more than that. It's actually a story about a girl who is trying to find herself and her place and purpose in the world," said director Kyle Newman. "That's everyone's story - all the more so in the High School years."
Main Street Films released the period drama "Great Expectations," based on the classic Charles Dickens novel, starring Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter, on November 8th, and one of the only Yiddish narrative features to come out of North American in over six decades, "The Pin" in late October.
"Barely Lethal" will be released in 2014.
