According to The Huffington Post, AMERICAN IDOL producer Nigel Lythgoe has invited President  Obama and recording artist Al Green to perform on an upcoming episode of the Fox singing competition.

President Obama recently performed a short rendition of Al Green's hit song 'Let's Stay Together' at a fundraising event at New York's famed Apollo Theater in Harlem. After the unexpected performance, Lythgoe used his twitter account to invite the President to sing on his show, writing "@BarackObama we loved your vocal performance so much we'd love to invite you on to #AmericanIdol this Season for a duet with Al Green."

Only a few days after Obama's off-the-cuff performance, digital download sales of Green's classic song were up 490%.

Yesterday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney attempted to inspire a similar reaction when he crooned 'America the Beautiful' at a Florida campaign rally. Lythgoe was not a fan of the GOP frontrunner's performance, tweeting, "If it were an election based on vocal talent @barackobama would beat Romney hands down. Mitt was very flat singing 'America the Beautiful.'"
