Variety is reporting this morning that ratings for this year's Academy Awards, hosted by Hugh Jackman, improved by 6% in the first Nielsen overnight ratings compared to last year.

The Nielsen report shows that the overnight ratings were a 23.3/35 share, versus last year's telecast which was 21.9/33 share. Full numbers are expected later today, but it's also being reported that New York had the largest ratings for the musical heavy awards.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2008 were being presented on Sunday, February 22, 2009, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network.

The Oscar presentation also was televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.
