Directed by Soren Sorensen, Omar Sosa’s 88 Well-Tuned Drums had its world premiere in 2022 at the USA Film Festival in Dallas, TX. Since then, the film has screened at over 30 film festivals across North America and Europe, winning awards at Albuquerque Film+Music Experience in Albuquerque; Hamptons Doc Fest in Sag Harbor; Imaginarium Independent Film Festival in Louisville; Massachusetts Independent Film Festival in Worcester; ReelHeART International Film Festival in Toronto; and Rhode Island International Film Festival in Providence.
Multiple GRAMMY-nominee Omar Sosa is one of the most versatile artists on the scene today. He fuses a wide range of jazz, world music, and electronic elements with his native Afro-Cuban roots to create a fresh and original sound - all with a Latin jazz heart.
Featuring Sosa and collaborators born across five continents in conversation and performance, Omar Sosa’s 88 Well-Tuned Drums is a frenetic, nonlinear narrative. It follows Sosa’s sinuous trajectory from his birth and upbringing in Cuba, his education at the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Música in Havana, military service in Angola during that country’s long civil war, to his relocation to Ecuador where, for a time, he produced commercial jingles. Sosa’s solo career began with a fateful move to San Francisco in 1995 where he met manager Scott Price who co-produced the film and soundtrack LP, the latter of which is now available on limited edition vinyl.
