NIki Caro, known for films such as Whale Rider and North Country, is going back to the big screen again as writer/director of Callas.
Per Variety, the announcement was made at Cannes this past week - a time when many "in production" projects are told to the public to drum up hype. Caro, a New Zealand born artist, is also finishing up post-production on the Disney film, McFarland to be out sometime this fall.
Though still in the main casting phase, the film has already been scouted for locations; purportedly in Italy, France, and the Czech Republic. Filming will likely start in the fall.
Callas will focus on the life of opera singer Maria Callas with attention to her relationship to Greek billionaire Aristotle Onassis. On her own thoughts on Callas, "I have a great fascination for Maria Callas, who was such a powerful woman and artist, but also troubled and stuck in this very destructive relationship."
Callas was a famed operatic singer who's personal life fell victim to the tabloid stories of her day. A U.S. citizen at birth, she moved to Greece to train where she stayed. Her affair with Onassis while still married, and the later affair they continued while he was with Jacqueline Kennedy have since became as famous as her talents.
We will have more details as they come.
