Continuing the momentum generated by its $300 millionplus worldwide theatrical box office performance, the action thriller Now You See Me soared to number one on the DVD, Blu-ray and cable/satellite VOD charts as well as reaching number one on iTunes, Amazon, Vudu and xBox during the past week, Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) announced today.
Now You See Me was released theatrically by Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate company, on May 31, 2013, and the film grossed $117 million at the domestic box office and more than $200 million internationally on its way to becoming one of the sleeper hits of the summer, with additional territories including China and Japan still to open.
The film was released on DVD, Blu-ray and cable/satellite VOD on Tuesday, September 4, after launching as an early electronic sell-through title for the Labor Day weekend. It has already generated more than 1.6 million reported and estimated digital and on demand transactions, with a whopping 70 percent of digital transactions in HD.
"We're very pleased that Now You See Me ranked number one across the board on packaged media, on demand and digital platforms alike," said Lionsgate President and General Manager of Home Entertainment Sales & Distribution Ron Schwartz and Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution Jim Packer. "The title has demonstrated broad-based strength in every format and on every platform where it has been released, underscoring our commitment to utilize digital, on demand and packaged media to offer our consumers a broad spectrum of choice."
Mr. Schwartz also noted that more than 40 percent of Now You See Me's packaged media sales were for Blu-ray discs.
Directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt, Now You See Me stars Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman in the story of an elite FBI squad pitted in a game of cat and mouse against The Four Horsemen, a super-team of the world's greatest illusionists. The Four Horsemen pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law.
