57 percent of Americans oppose Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's controversial proposal to bar Muslims from entering the United States, according to numbers released early from an upcoming NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Republicans' views on the ban, however, are mixed: 42 percent support the ban compared to 36 who oppose it. The difference in views narrows in terms of Republican primary voters: 38 percent support and 39 percent oppose.
A majority of both Democrats (75 percent) and independents (55 percent) disagree with the proposal.
41 percent believe Trump's general campaign statements s are frequently insulting and have the wrong approach; 22 percent say that Trump is telling it like it is and has the right approach. 24 percent say that Trump's manner and language might be problematic, but think he's raising important issues.
The poll numbers also show that Americans have a favorable view of Muslims: 59 percent positive to 29 percent negative.
Extended political analysis is included below. The remainder of the poll will release this coming Sunday, Dec. 13 and Monday, Dec. 14.
