Deadline reports that talk show queen Ellen Degeneres is behind a new comedy heading to NBC which will feature a lesbian lead character. The currently untitled project will be a multi-camera comedy executive produced by DeGeneres.
Liz Feldman will write and co-executive produce the show which will follow "a lesbian and her straight male best friend who get pregnant just as he meets and marries the love of his life."
If the project goes to series, it will join a long-standing NBC tradition of comedies featuring gay characters, including Will & Grace, last year's The New Normal and the current freshman sitcom Sean Saves The World.
DeGeneres famously came out on her own ABC sitcom, Ellen, sixteen years ago. The series ran from 1994 to 1998, consisting of 109 episodes. The title role of Ellen Morgan, played by stand-up comedian DeGeneres, was a neurotic bookstore owner in her thirties.
