NBC UNIVERSO, the modern sports and entertainment cable channel for Latinos, will air live the powerhouse semifinal match between the top two women's soccer teams in the world: USA vs. Germany live on Tues., June 30 at 7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. PT. The winner will advance to the final game to compete for its third FIFA Women's World Cup title against either Japan or England, which will play their semifinal match against one another on Wed., July 1 at 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT.
Currently, Germany is the world's No. 1 ranked women's soccer team and is boasting the game's best offenses - 16 goals scored in this year's tournament. The
USA is the world's No. 2 team and has the best defenses in this year's tournament - allowing only one goal throughout the tournament. The U.S. and Germany have played one another a total of three times in FIFA World Cup competition.
For the U.S. Women's National Team, this will be its seventh consecutive trip to the semifinals in a FIFA Women's World Cup. The Americans have gone on to win the title twice, first in 1991 and again in 1999. Its defensive dominance throughout this year's tournament seems to be the key to its success thus far. The 'Stars and Stripes' has allowed only one goal, which came in its first game during group stage play. However, for team
USA to have another shot at playing for a third title, it will need to find its offense against Germany. The American women have scored only seven goals during this World Cup and have been criticized for winning ugly.
Germany has two FIFA World Cup titles (2003 and 2007), which ties the
USA for most all-time. Today's group of German women is a robust arsenal of weapons that can score from nearly any place on the field and at any moment during the game. Its revved-up offense has an impressive 20 goals, which averages four goals per match compared to the USA's 1.4 goals per game.
The finesse, power and physical playing style of both teams, are similar to the characteristics that many soccer fans have come to appreciate in many of the Latin American soccer teams that they cheer for.
NBC UNIVERSO will also feature the second semifinal match between Japan and England on Wed., July 1 with coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT. Japan is currently the fourth best women's team in the world, and the reigning FIFA Women's World Cup champions. They beat the
USA in a penalty shootout to earn the title in 2011 in Germany. This will be the third time that the Japanese women will play England in a FIFA World Cup. They are 0-1-1 against the Lionesses. England, which is currently ranked sixth in the world, defeated host country Canada 2-1 to find itself in a Women's World Cup semifinal match for the first time.
The winner of this match will play the winner of the
USA vs. Germany game for the title.
