NBC Sports Group has a combined 80 hours of live tournament and news coverage on tap for The Players Championship from golf's greatest stadium, TPC Sawgrass, today-Sunday, May 6-12, which surpasses 2012 as the largest collection of live coverage hours in the history of the tournament.
What perennially has proved to be one of the strongest fields of players for any event on the tournament schedule each year,
The Players Championship will receive a combined 22 live hours of tournament coverage on both
Golf Channel and NBC, as well as 57 live programming hours headlined by Live From
The Players and Morning Drive on Golf Channel, featuring news reports, player news conferences, talk, inside analysis, competition highlights and player interviews. On Monday at 5 p.m. ET, a Green Carpet Special will air prior to the 2013 World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, as well as a two-hour special at 10 p.m. ET honoring this year's inductees, including Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie, Willie Park Jr, Ken Schofield and Ken Venturi.
Golf Channel also will feature debate and discussion that is the signature of Grey Goose 19th Hole, live Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET from a special set at TPC Sawgrass.
The Players Championship Broadcast Team: Host
Dan Hicks and lead analyst
Johnny Miller will anchor
Golf Channel on
NBC weekend coverage, as well as select hours of early round coverage on Golf Channel, rotating with Terry Gannon and Nick Faldo. On the golf course will be Gary Koch (16 & 17) and
Peter Jacobsen (14) in tower positions, and Roger Maltbie, Mark Rolfing and Notah Begay walking with
The Players. Steve Sands will handle player interviews and Kelly Tilghman will serve as tournament telecast host.
Compelling Camera Angles:
NBC Sports Group will cover the par-3, 17th hole and its famous island green with a total of 11 high-definition cameras, including two "periscope cams" and a microscopic lens embedded in the lip of the small bunker fronting the green. The periscope cams are situated in the small lake surrounding the green, peeking just above the water's surface and providing a 360-degree, green-high view of the hole.
Making its
Encore will be the "Actioncam," a cable-suspended camera system that will fly over the lake between the 16th and 17th greens. A "Hyper-mo" camera also will be utilized, which is a super-slow-motion camera that shoots at 63,000 frames per second and able to show the compression of a golf ball as it is being hit.
NBC Sports Group's production elements also will include a camera operator lifted by a crane 150 feet into the air above the tree line, showing unique shots of the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. Another camera operator is ferried to a small island near the 17th green where he is marooned for approximately eight hours, capturing player reactions from this unique angle.
