Shiffrin is the defending two-time world champion in slalom (2013 and 2015), and is the current overall World Cup leader on the women's circuit, leading reigning overall champion Lara Gut of Switzerland. Vonn is a six-time medalist at the World Championships, which include a pair of world titles in the downhill and super-G in Val d'Isere in 2009. Vonn heads into the World Championships looking to build off her downhill victory in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in late January. She now boasts 77 career World Cup victories, nine shy of Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark, who holds the all-time World Cup record with 86 race wins on the men's circuit.
On the men's side, Travis Ganong and Andrew Weibrecht headline the U.S medal hopes. Weibrecht is a two-time Olympic medalist, while Ganong aims to replicate his silver-medal performance in the downhill at the 2015 World Championships. Ganong won the downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen last weekend, his second career World Cup victory. Austria's Marcel Hirscher has dominated the men's World Cup circuit this season, and is expected to be a front runner in St. Moritz, along with Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen and Kjetil Jansrud, and France's Alexis Pinturault.
