NBC Sports Preseason NFL Coverage Ranks #1

NBC has finished #2 in adults 18-49 among ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX for the Primetime week of August 19-25, led by NBC Sports' Vikings-49ers NFL Preseason telecast Sunday night, which ranked #1 for the week among the Big 4 networks in adults 18-49. According to "live plus same day" ratings from Nielsen Media Research, NBC averaged a 1.3 rating, 4 share in 18-49 and 4.7 million viewers overall for the week.

For the week, NBC was #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX in adults 18-49, total viewers and most other key measures and was #1 among those nets in women 18-34 and tied for #1 in adults and men 18-34.

Top-rated NBC shows for the week of August 19-25 in adults 18-49 include: "Sunday Night Football (#1), Tuesday's "America's Got Talent" (tied for #6), Wednesday's "Talent" (tied for #8), Monday's "American Ninja Warrior" (#13), Wednesday's "Talent" encore (tied for #15), Thursday's "Hollywood Game Night" (tied for #18) and Monday's "Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls" (tied for #23). Rankings exclude sports pre- and post-game shows.

Sunday's Vikings-49ers Preseason coverage was also #1 on the Big 4 networks for the week in adults 18-34 and all key adult-male demos, while Tuesday's "America's Got Talent" ranked #1 on those nets in teens 12-17 and tied for #1 in kids 2-11.

Primetime averages for the week of August 19-25 in adults 18-49 are: CBS, 1.5/5; NBC, 1.3/4; ABC, 1.0/3; Fox, 0.9/3; and CW, 0.3/1. In overall total viewers, the weekly averages were: CBS, 6.1 million; NBC, 4.7 million; ABC, 4.1 million; Fox, 2.6 million; and CW, 0.9 million.

Averages for the 2012-13 Broadcast Year to date are: CBS, 2.4/7; Fox, 2.2/7; NBC, 2.1/6; ABC, 2.0/6; and CW, 0.6/2. In overall total viewers, the season averages are: CBS, 10.2 million; ABC, 7.1 million; NBC, 6.6 million; Fox, 6.1 million; and CW, 1.5 million.

For the 2012-13 broadcast year to date, NBC is running within a tenth of a rating point of #2 and within 0.3 of a point of #1 in adults 18-49, and ranks #2 in adults 25-54 and adults 18-34.

NBC highlights for the week of August 19-25:

Monday: "American Ninja Warrior" (1.5 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) won the time period among ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX in every key ratings category. "American Ninja Warrior" grew half-hour to half-hour by 14% (to a 1.6 from a 1.4) and has now grown half-hour to half-hour by at least 0.2 of a point with seven of seven telecasts this summer.

"Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls" (1.1/3 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall from 9-10 p.m. ET) ranked #1 in the time period among ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX in adults 18-49.

"Siberia" (0.7/2 in adults 18-49, 1.8 million viewers overall from 10:01-11 p.m. ET) matched its top 18-49 rating since July 15 and was up week to week in total viewers by 4% (to 1.831 million from 1.763 million), making it the top "Siberia" in total viewers since July 29.

Tuesday: NBC ranked #1 for the night in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures, led by the #1 show of the night, "America's Got Talent" (2.2/7 in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET). "Talent" topped the night's #2 telecast on those nets in 18-49 by a 69% margin (with a 2.2 from 9-11 p.m. vs. the 1.3 from 8-10 for ABC's "Extreme Weight Loss"). In the 9-11 p.m. time period, "Talent" is #1 among ABC, CBS and NBC and FOX in every key ratings measure.

An encore telecast of "Hollywood Game Night" (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) grew from its first half-hour to its second in every key category, including gains of 22% in 18-49 rating (to a 1.1 from a 0.9) and 27% in women 18-49 (1.4 vs. 1.1).

Wednesday: NBC ranked #1 Wednesday night in total viewers with the #1 show of the night by that measure, "America's Got Talent" (2.1/6 in 18-49, 9.2 million viewers overall from 9-10:01 p.m. ET). Versus the same night last year, "Talent" finished within 0.2 of a rating point in 18-49 (with a 2.1 rating vs. a 2.3) and is up 9% in total viewers (9.4 million vs. 8.6 million).

"Camp" (0.9/3 in adults 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall from 10:01-11 p.m. ET) maintained its week-ago 18-49 rating. In its first seven weeks, "Camp" has earned NBC's top seven 18-49 ratings in the slot, excluding Stanley Cup Hockey coverage, since May 22.

Thursday: "Hollywood Game Night" (1.2/4 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET) ranked #1 in The Hour among ABC, CBS and NBC in 18-49 for a seventh time in seven weeks, and was #1 or tied for #1 among those nets this week in every other key demographic. "Hollywood Game Night" matched a four-week high in 18-49 (best since July 25) and delivered a three-week high in total viewers (best since August 1).

This week's "Hollywood Game Night" generated growth from half-hour to half-hour of 18% (to a 1.3 from a 1.1), marking the sixth time in seven telecasts the show has delivered half-hour growth, despite the 10 p.m. hour. The August 22 "Hollywood Game Night" generated half-hour growth in every key measure.

Friday: "Dateline NBC" (1.0/4 in 18-49, 5.5 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. ET) was the top non-sports choice in the time period on ABC, NBC and FOX in adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers, making this the ninth week in a row "Dateline" has ranked #1 or tied for #1, excluding sports, in its Friday time period among those networks in all three categories. "Dateline" tied for the #1 non-sports telecast of the night on the Big 4 networks and is the #1 non-sports telecast outright on those nets in adults 25-54 and total viewers.

Sunday: NBC won Sunday night among ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX with NBC Sports' coverage of the Minnesota Vikings-San Francisco 49ers NFL Preseason Football game (2.7/8 in 18-49, 8.2 million viewers overall from 8:08-11:02 p.m. ET), which scored the #2 results for any Preseason NFL telecast so far this summer, behind only NBC's August 4 coverage of the Cowboys-Dolphins Hall of Fame Game.

NBC's 2.1 Primetime average from 7-11 p.m. ET in 18-49 is the second-highest Sunday average for a Big 4 network since June 16 (ABC's telecast of the NBA Finals), trailing over that span only August 4, the night of the Hall of Fame Game on NBC (3.0 from 7-11 p.m.).
