MONDAY'S #NASCARTHROWBACK SPECIAL CLIMBS U.S. TWITTER TRENDS

NBC Sports hosted an interactive watch party Monday evening that combined real time social media posts with the presentation of the 2011 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES Championship race from Homestead Miami Speedway. The special honored 2011 Champion Tony Stewart who currently stands just three days away from running his final Sprint Cup race and stepping into retirement.

The end result of the social experiment gave Monday Night Football and Dancing with the Stars a run for their money on social, climbing the twitter trends to reach the No. 3 U.S. trending spot on Twitter for over an hour. Stewart joined in on the fun, live tweeting throughout the race, and bringing fans insight into what he was thinking and feeling lap-by-lap. Fellow drivers including Joey Logano, Austin Dillon, Kasey Kahnechimed in along with race teams and the NBC NASCAR on-air team. NBC Sports continues to push the boundary between social and on-air presentations, creating a symbiotic relationship unseen in other sports presentations.
