On Friday, the night of the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Nightly News topped
ABC by +1.1 million total viewers (16%) and
CBS by +2.6 million viewers (46%). In the demo, Nightly News outperformed
ABC by +688,000 (46%) and
CBS by +876,000 (68%) on Friday.
On Sunday, August 7, Nightly News was the #1 non-sports program of the day among total viewers and the A25-54 demo across all of television. The show averaged 12 million total viewers and 4.1 million A25-54 viewers.

Holt started anchoring "NBC Nightly News" live from Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, August 4. He will anchor the broadcast from Rio every night through August 19.
