NBC Connecticut / WVIT won a George Foster Peabody Award for its coverage of "Breaking News: Tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School," the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication announced today. The Peabody Awards, the oldest awards in broadcasting, are considered among the most prestigious and selective awards in electronic media.

In announcing the award, the Peabody Awards said of NBC Connecticut, "The first TV news outlet to report the horrendous shooting spree at Sandy Hook, WVIT broadcast careful, comprehensive coverage that informed not only its own audience but viewers around the country."

"No news organization wants to cover a horrific tragedy like what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School, however, I am proud of the responsiveness, thoroughness and sensitivity displayed throughout our coverage," said Mike St. Peter, Vice President of News at NBC Connecticut. "On behalf of the entire station, we are so honored and grateful for this prestigious recognition."

NBC Connecticut was one of just 39 organizations to be honored with a 2012 Peabody Award, which will be formally presented at a luncheon event on May 20, 2013 in New York City. This is the station's first Peabody Award ever.
