Three weeks later in TV time- Deacon and Rayna are lovey dovey, despite a distant Maddie, and Avery and Juliette are in full-on newborn parent mode. Layla, in a typical passive aggressive meeting with Jeff, introduces tonight's famous and anticipated guest star- Jade St. John, otherwise known as Christina Aguilera.
Will Lexington has taken a huge step in finally admitting that he may like Kyle Dean Massey's character (whose name escapes me right now but it's Kyle Dean Massey so that's all that matters). Meanwhile Gunnar, Mr. Too-Shy-To-Ask-Out-Scarlett, is throwing himsefl a nice little pity party.
Call it distant, call it rebellion, or call it primetime drama: Maddie has a secret (at least from Rayna) boyfriend. Not so secret anymore though, right Rayna?
...update. Not-so-secret boyfriend, period. Luke is well aware Maddie has been dating his son, Colt. She's been over at their ranch for the last three weeks, obviously.
Deacon ("Uncle Deacon") meeting Avery and Juliette's daughter Cadence is precious. Juliette may be overwhelmed and panicking (trying to simultaneously write a song for her upcoming movie), but her life is pretty darn adorable right now. To a spectator, at least. That isn't changing diapers.
Jeff and Jade have some aggressive, convaluted history that clearly hasn't recently been discused. Formerly engaged, Jade is not a super successful pop (former country) singer not toruing the world and living the high life. While Jeff is... headed nowhere quickly. His newest mission? Getting Layla to open for Jade. This poor girl (Layla) has been tossed all over the place musically and, made some awful decisions, yes. I really just kind of want her to disappear. Honestly, she doesn't bring too much to the show anymore. Or ever.
One perk of Layla's newest "official" management is the rich feud between Jeff and Rayna. The selfish, power hungry music exec versus the sassy country queen is a classic I just can't seem to get sick of- especially when it involved rooting against every little thing Jeff does.
Honestly, I am a bit disappointed in this episode. Granted, they can't all be winners. Will secretly loves Kyle Dean Massey, Gunnar secretly loves Scarlett, Deacon is still dealing with both Maddie and cancer, Teddy is always and forever shady, and Juliette is struggling with motherhood. Interesting, but not necessarily 42 minutes worth of action and excitement. Waiting for some kind of intense cliffhanger or revelation the Nashville writers are known for following episodes like this.
And boom goes the dynamite. Teddy's hooker is working for the FBI. Avery is quitting the band. And Juliette is oblivious.
