According to The Hollywood Reporter, Molly Ringwald has signed on to the cast of JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, Jon M. Chu's big screen adaptation based on the popular '80s animated show. The actress joins previously announced cast members Aubrey Peeples, Ryan Guzman, Juliette Lewis, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau and Hayley Kiyoko.
Based on the animated TV series which aired from 1985 to 1988, the story follows "Jerrica Benton and her alter ego, Jem, who fronts the band the Holograms. It's being described as a modern take on the mysterious pop star, and will follow the band through Los Angeles on a music-driven adventure."
Ringwald is best known for his 1980's series of films including Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. She recently starred in ABC Family's drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager and has appeared on Broadway in Cabaret and Enchanted April.
