Discovery's SHARK WEEK kicked off with the primetime special PHELPS VS. SHARK: GREAT GOLD VS. GREAT WHITE. The show featured a 100-meter open water race held in Cape Town, South Africa, with the Olympian challenging the mighty fish to an unusual swimming match.
The multi-Gold medalist was at a slight disadvantage as his top swimming speed is approximately 6 mph. Typically, a great white shark can get up to speeds above 25 mph. In order to even out the playing field, Phelps donned a specially designed wetsuit and wore a monofin to simulate the powers of the shark's tail. Unfortunately the modifications didn't make a difference, as Phelps came in second place two seconds behind his competitor.
