Famed designer Michael Kors has created classic looks for superstars, but he also designs clothes for more budget-minded buyers, and despite the price difference he has the same goals in mind for all his creations, he tells Rita Braver in an interview for CBS SUNDAY MORNING to be broadcast Sunday, Feb. 5 (9:00 AM ET) on the CBS Television Network.
"They want to look fashionable but current," Kors tells Braver. "They want to feel powerful but sexy. They want to feel youthful but not ridiculous."
The designer, 57, who has created dresses for the likes of former First Lady Michelle Obama and actresses Kate Hudson and Blake Lively, opens up to Braver about his career in fashion, how he broke into the business and how he almost lost it all.
Kors launched his eponymous brand in the early 1980s when he was just 21.
"I knew nothing, I have to tell you," Kors says of starting out. "I didn't know what UPS was. I mean, I didn't know how you actually delivered the clothes to the stores."
How times change. Today, Kors is a billionaire and one of the biggest names in fashion.
"I think Michael has always understood the modern American woman," says Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. "That he is trying to make her look the best that she can. He's less concerned about clothes wearing a woman. He wants a woman to wear the clothes."
CBS SUNDAY MORNING is broadcast Sundays (9:00-10:30 AM ET) on the
CBS Television Network. Rand Morrison is the executive producer.
