Variety reports that Marcia Gay Harden has joined the cast of Michael Radford's ELSA & FRED. The actress will join previously announced cast members Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, Chris Noth, Jared Gilman, James Brolin, George Segal, Wendell Pierce, Reg Rogers and Erika Alexander. Edward Saxon will produce.
Production on the film commenced yesterday in New Orleans. The film tells the story of two people who fall in love. It is an English language remake of the 2005 Spanish-Argentine film, "Elsa & Fred," from Marcos Carnevale.
Radford penned the adaptation along with 'Il Postino's Anna Pavignano. In the original version, Fred was a "recently widowed Spaniard in his 70s who has led a quiet life and retires to an apartment in Madrid with Elsa -- an Argentinian and a chronic liar -- as his neighbor."
Harden debuted on Broadway in 1993 in the role of Harper Pitt in Tony Kushner's ANGELS IN AMERICA. The role earned her critical acclaim and she received a Tony Award nomination (Best Featured Actress in a Play).
In 2009, Harden returned to Broadway in GOD OF CARNAGE and received a Tony Award for her work in the play. Harden's work in film has earned her a 2000 Academy Award (for Pollock) and a 2004 nomination (Mystic River).
