Deadline writes that Liev Schreiber and Jaden Smith have signed on to star in an upcoming film adaptation of THE GOOD LORD BIRD, based on the book by James McBride.
THE GOOD LORD BIRD, which won the 2013 National Book Award, follows Henry "Onion" Shackleford (Smith), a slave who meets abolitionist John Brown (Schreiber) in Kansas in 1856 and travels the country with "Brown's motley crew of freedom fighters".
As reported by Deadline, the story is told "with a satirical bent through the eyes of Onion, who wears a dress and is at first mistaken for a girl, as he Bears witness to Brown's historic campaign and encounters the likes of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman en route tot he bloody Harper's Ferry raid that helped spark the Civil War."
Smith has appeared on the big screen in After Earth, The Karate Kid, The Pursuit of Happyness and more. He will soon return for Breck Eisner's The Karate Kid 2.
Schreiber's recent credits include A Perfect Man, Fading Gigolo, Lee Daniels' The Butler, Movie 43, Mental, Goon, Salt, Every Day and more. He also portrayed 'Victor Creed' in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He will next appear on the big screen in Pawn Sacrifice and can currently be seen in the TV series Ray Donovan.
Shreiber is producing THE GOOD LORD BIRD with McBride and Brian Taylor.
