According to TVGuide.com, actor LeVar Burton will be bringing back the popular PBS children's reading series READING RAINBOW with a new app. Burton hosted and executive produced the program which ran for 26 years on PBS before ending in 2009. The show was the recipient of a Peabody award and an astonishing 26 Emmy awards. The new mobile application will be created through Burton's site RRKidz.
In an interview with Mashable, Burton explained, "There is a brand new generation of kids who could definitely use the kind of spark and inspiration Reading Rainbow provided where actually becoming a reader is concerned. As far as I can tell, reading will never go out of style, and neither will good old-fashioned storytelling."
Burton's site currently offers episodes of the award-winning program for sale but the actor would also like to be able to reach kids using modern technology. "The center point of the app is books. Wonderful, lightly enhanced digital books for children. However, we're also very interested in delivering an enriching experience to kids, much like classic Reading Rainbow did on TV." Burton commented.
