LATIN REEL, the year-round film series committed to Latin-driven storytelling, announces its official launch of cinematic programming in New York City. With a mission to present NYC premieres of films made by or about the Latin-American community, Latin Reel will kick off its 2019 series on Thursday, February 7 at 7:30 pm with the opening night NYC premiere of acclaimed Oscar-shortlisted Colombian film BIRDS OF PASSAGE, directed by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra, at Village East Cinemas.
Throughout 2019, Latin Reel will present a curated program of feature narratives, documentaries, and short film screenings that foster understanding and inspire cross-cultural discussions in select venues across New York City. Following the opening night screening, Latin Reel will next present an intimate program of narrative short films from Chile, Venezuela, and Brazil on Thursday, February 28 at the Museum of Arts and Design. Additional Latin Reel programming slate for 2019 will be released in the early spring.
"Latin Reel began as a quest to reveal the vibrancy and the distinct cultural voice found in contemporary Latin American film," remarks Jesus Hernandez, Artistic Director of Latin Reel. "We wanted to devise an opportunity for New Yorkers to view these groundbreaking films for the first time, and for the film series to enrich the multicultural landscape of NYC."
