Today, Dr. Oz is joined by kidnap Survivor and American activist Elizabeth Smart. She discusses her new book, "My Story" and discusses some of her darkest moments in captivity and how she created her own path to recovery.

On moving on with her life, Smart says: "I remember just Being heartbroken over the thought of what I had lost and what I would never have. So when I was rescued, I was so excited to come back to high school. I was so excited to have all the normal parts of life that I'd thought I'd missed out on forever and I didn't want to miss a part of it.

And so finding my own Prince Charming and getting married and having a family that was one of the biggest and most important things for me. Those were something I thought I'd never have and I knew how important my family was. I mean, my parents and my brothers and sisters and I wanted to have that. And I'd seen how these two acted, I've seen how every life they had touched, they had destroyed and I knew I didn't want to be like them."

The episode airs today, Thursday, October 17th, 2013. Check local listings.
