The creative minds behind "I'm Gonna Eat Your Lunch," the comedy web series that revolves around a cast of neurotic puppets working at an ad agency, spent roughly $40,000 of their own money to fund the pilot episode. Two years in the making, the episode was a profound and sometimes difficult learning experience for the cast and crew. Today, Dan Marcus , one of the show's producers, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to generate interest and, more importantly, capital to fund further episodes of the show. With much of episode 2 already on paper, the only commodity that's lacking is cash. The goal of the campaign is to raise $30,000 by April 25.
The concept of the show is straightforward: A team of high-maintenance puppets working at Grumpusworks Viral Media have to transform viral videos into full-fledged advertising campaigns. Their boss, the unseen Mr. Grumpus, is a complete rage monster, and his employees each have "questionable" skills. The result is a zany brew of unpredictable comedy that's garnered thousands of Facebook fans since its initial release.
Being independent, self-funded filmmakers, Marcus and his team encountered institutional hurdles when trying to distribute their web series on major outlets such as Amazon Instant Video and iTunes. Marcus describes a veritable circus of hoops that one must navigate to gain traction on these major distribution channels.
As an antidote to the less-than-amazing experience that the team had with iTunes and other major media outlets, the first episode of "I'm Gonna Eat Your Lunch" was recently uploaded to YouTube. It's also available on the Kickstarter page for the duration of the fundraising campaign. Fans can view the entire episode free; Marcus expects subsequent episodes to be distributed via the same channels.
"Independent artists always face an uphill climb. Building buzz naturally begins with a quality and worthwhile production, and we think we've achieved that with 'I'm Gonna Eat Your Lunch," explains Marcus. "The next step is to expand the audience as organically as possible. Kickstarter is a means to that end. To sweeten the deal, we're giving away a variety of gifts and perks to backers at specific dollar levels."
Backers at the $25 level will be listed in the credits of episode 2. A signed Blu-ray DVD of the show will be sent to backers who pledge $50 or more. For $5,000, backers will receive an associate producer's credit for the upcoming episode. Marcus anticipates delivery of these gifts and credits in June.
The future of "I'm Gonna Eat Your Lunch" rests with the generosity of the viewing public. If the Kickstarter campaign can drum up the needed capital to get episode 2 off the ground, Marcus and his team will pull out all the stops to grow the audience and pave the way for further hilarious installments of these Unforgettable puppets.
