According to The Hollywood Reporter, Katie Holmes has signed on to join Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges in The Giver, a Phillip Noyce-directed drama from The Weinstein Co. and Walden Media.

The sci-fi project is based on Lois Lowry's YA novel, which tells of a seemingly utopian society where there is no conflict, racism or sickness. Brenton Thwaites plays a boy who is selected for his life service as the "Receiver of Memory" and works with The "Giver", the previous Receiver, played by Bridges. Streep will play the society's "Chief Elder," the leader of those who assign chosen individuals their life services.

Holmes will portray the boy's "Birthmother," who dutifully obeys the laws that govern their increasingly dystopian society.

According to THR, The Giver is "eyeing a budget of around $25 million" and will be produced by Nikki Silver of Tonik Productions along with Neil Koenigsberg and Bridges. Michael Mitnick wrote the most recent script as an adaptation of Lois Lowry's The Giver." A shoot in South Africa is being planned.

Holmes' upcoming big screen projects include Days and Nights, Miss Meadows, Mania Days and Responsible Adults. Recent screen credits include Jack and Jill, the TV series The Kennedys, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, The Romantics, Thank You for Smoking and Batman Begins. The actress last appeared on Broadway in 2012's Dead Accounts, as well as the 2008 revival of All My Sons.
