NBC has given a pilot commitment to a new comedy starring Kal Penn, according to Variety.
Matt Murray and Penn will write and produced the now-unnamed project. It follows disgraced New York City Councilman and former baseball wunderkind Garrett Shah (Penn), who finds his calling when faced with six recent immigrants IN SEARCH OF the American Dream.
Michael Schur will be a supervising executive producer via his Fremulon Entertainment banner.
Penn's most recent TV role was on "Designated Survivor," but he is best known for his starring role in the "Harold & Kumar" comedy film franchise, as well his time on medical drama "House."
Murray and Schur have collaborated in the past on "Parks and Recreation," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," and "The Good Place." Murray's other credits include "Saturday Night Live," "Community," and "The Cleveland Show."
If the project moves forward, it would be Schur's fourth show at NBC. The broadcaster currently airs "The Good Place," and will air both "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Abby's" starting midseason.
