Dench was teaching a master class on Shakespeare when Cumberbatch, who was sitting in the front row, called out to her, "Would you like to be in Richard III with me?" Having been put on the spot and with the audience to egg her on, Dench finally agreed.
Cumberbatch will be playing Richard III and Dench will be playing Queen Margaret, one of the few Shakespearean roles she has yet to play. The play will be directed by Dominic Cooke.
Dench's career has taken her both to the West End as well as Broadway. Her West End credits include Peter and Alice (2013), A Little Night Music (1995), The Good Companions (1974), and Cabaret (1968). Her Broadway credits include Into the Woods (2002), Amy's View (1999), King Henry V (1958), and Twelfth Night (1958).
The adaptation is set to air next summer.
