As BWW reported earlier today, two-time Oscar-winning composer James Horner has died in a plane crash. An experienced pilot, the 61-year-old was flying his small aircraft when it crashed north of Santa Barbara, California.

The musician was perhaps best known for composing the score for James Cameron's Titanic, which earned him two Academy Awards, one for Best Score and a second for co-writing the original song "My Heart Will Go On", performed by Celine Dion. He also composed the score for Cameron's Avatar and was on board to pen the music for the upcoming sequels.

Horner also wrote the Oscar-nominated scores for the films A Beautiful Mind, Braveheart, Apollo 13 and Field of Dreams, all of which were also nominated for Best Picture (the first two won the award), along with Cameron's Aliens and THE SONG "Somewhere Out There" for An American Tail.

Stars of stage, screen and music took to social media to share their reaction to the tragic news:

Celine Dion wrote on her official site: "Rene and I are deeply saddened by the tragic death of James Horner. He will always remain a great composer in our hearts. James played an important part in my career. We will miss him. We offer his family and friends our deepest sympathy."
