Jermaine Paul, a back-up singer for superstar Alicia Keys, was among the contestants who got through the grueling 'battle round' of competition on NBC's THE VOICE last night.

On the show, the coaches enlisted the help of music industry professionals to offer their knowledge and skill as advisers. Christina Aguilera teamed up with Jewel and Lionel Richie, Adam Levine with Alanis Morissette and Robin Thicke, Cee Lo Green with Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Ne-Yo, and Blake Shelton with Kelly Clarkson and Miranda Lambert. In this phase the coaches pit two of their own team members against each other in a dueling duet. After the vocal face-off, each coach must choose which vocalist from their team is the strongest and advance them to the live shows. Carson Daly ("Last Call with Carson Daly") hosts.

At the end of the battle episodes, only the strongest members of each coach's roster remain and proceed to the live stage shows. In this final performance phase of the competition, the top artists from each team will compete against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience will vote to save their favorite talent, leaving the coach to decide live who they want to save and who will not move on. In the end, each coach will have one star artist left ready to compete against the other teams’ finalists to be named “The Voice” – the winner will receive the grand prize of a recording contract.
