In an exclusive interview with Harry Smith, author Jennifer Finney Boylan, a professor at Colby College, and one of the most well-known transgendered people in America, talks about her new book Stuck in The Middle with You: A Memoir of Parenting in Three Genders. Married to Deedie Boylan for 25 years, Jennifer's new book describes the changing face of the American family and the resilience of her two sons and wife.

Today, May 3 Jennifer Finney Boylan, Deedie Boylan and their son Zach will be live on "TODAY." Later that night, at 10p/9c on "Rock Center with BrIan Williams," viewers will hear more from Jennifer and her family, including her wife Deedie who opens up about her reaction to the news, how she handled the transition and her fears about how it would affect their sons.

Sound bites follow - if used, must include mandatory credit with air date and time: "Rock Center with BrIan Williams," Friday, May 3 at 10p/9c.

Harry Smith:
Once the transition starts in earnest, how difficult was it for you?

DEEDIE BOYLAN:
One of the ways that I dealt with it was to sort of say, "Look, I'm not your consultant on how to be a girl." I didn't want her to touch my stuff. I didn't want her to wear my earrings. She got the journey of discovering who she really was and I had to sort of watch the man I had married disappear.

Harry Smith:
Did you ever think in a million years when you got married that you would go through this transformation?

JENNY BOYLAN:
No, I think it's very typical for us to think that love will make us into better people, will make us into the people that we hope to be. I really felt that that part of my life was over. But it only took a few years before the feelings returned and returned more powerfully.

Harry Smith:
Zach, do you feel like you live in a normal family?

ZACH BOYLAN:
If normal is a family that has a mom and a dad and two kids and a white picket fence - then no, I don't live in a normal family. But if a normal family is one where everyone treats each other as equals and with love, then yeah, I live in a normal family.
