According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gandolfini will star in a pilot for HBO titled CRIMINAL JUSTICE. The drama will be based on the BBC BAFTA-award winning series from Peter Moffat. It will be adapted for HBO by Steven Zaillian and Richard Price. Oscar winning writer Steven Zaillian will direct and co-pen the pilot with Richard Price.

The original series, set in New York City, followed a person through the justice system as they went on trial for murder. According to the report, HBO's reboot will "revolve around the story arc, which tracked Ben Whishaw as Ben, a guy who after a night of partying with a stranger, wakes up to find her stabbed to death and is charged with her murder."

Gandolfini will star as Jack Stone, described as "a downtrodden jailhouse attorney who frequents police stations for clients. There, he finds a client: Naz, an American-born Pakistani." Rizwan Ahmed is set to take on the role of Naz in the pilot, which will also feature Bill Camp as Box, Peyman Moadi as Salim Kahn and Poorna Jagannathan as Safar Kahn, Naz's parents.

Gandolfini performed in a 1992 Broadway production of On the Waterfront. He returned to the stage in 2009, appearing in Broadway's God of Carnage with Marcia Gay Harden,Hope Davis and Jeff Daniels.
