Jacob Burns Film Center Announces Slate of Fall Events  Image

Film fans will FALL in love with the new lineup of events and happenings at the Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC), a nonprofit cultural arts center and one of the most successful suburban film houses in the country. JBFC announced today a variety of unique and compelling film series launching and returning this fall. Select film screenings also feature thought-provoking and engaging Q&As with renowned American and international filmmakers, environmentalists, politicians, and more.

From films that examine the political issues of our day and a Contemporary Arab Cinema series to highly anticipated new releases, there is something for everyone to experience and enjoy at the JBFC this fall.

A summary of upcoming and highly anticipated events include:

· Jonathan Demme's Rarely Seen Cinema: Jenny Lumet Selects (Sept 23 - Oct 21) - For 12 years Jonathan Demme made his way to the JBFC in between film and life projects, where on Sundays he hosted a wild and eclectic series of screenings that encompassed his cinematic passions. JBFC and the Demme family have decided to re-launch the series to honor his joyful and generous belief in the value of communal experience. Kicking off the new and re-imagined series is actress and screenwriter Jenny Lumet, a longtime friend of Jonathan's, and author of his film Rachel Getting Married.

The series opens with Stormy Weather on Sept 23, featuring a Q&A with special guest curator Jenny Lumet. Future Screenings Include: The Duke Is Tops (Sept 30), Cabin in the Sky (Oct 7), Death of a Gunfighter (Oct 14) and The Wiz (Oct 21).

· The Best of the 2018 NY International Children's Film Festival (Sept 23) - Come join the fun on Art House Theater Day! Celebrate diversity and acceptance with this special event that includes two separate programs of Kid Flicks (short films from the New York International Children's Film Festival), select shorts made by JBFC students, free family-friendly activities in the Jane Peck Gallery, and an opportunity for attendees to vote for their favorite.

Line-up for Kids Flicks One at noon includes: Party Mouth (US), I Want to Live in THE ZOO (Russia), If You Fall (Canada)

*Recommended Ages: 3-7

Line-up for Kids Flicks Two at 1:30pm includes: Game (US), Poles Apart (UK), Gokurosama (France)

*Recommended Ages: 8+

· Halloween Movie Marathon V (Oct 26) - Get ready for a spook-tacular evening at the JBFC. Stay up all night and watch horror movies ranging from RESTORED classics and oddball gems to new favorites. There will also be a costume CONTEST and activities in the Jane Peck Gallery, with the concession stand open all night to serve plenty of coffee. 8:30pm arrival, 9:30pm marathon start.

· Contemporary Arab Cinema (Sept 20 - 27) - Featuring a week of fascinating, provocative films and engaging discussion, Contemporary Arab Cinema showcases filmmakers from the Arab world whose work has earned recognition at film festivals around the world but may not yet have reached American/New York audiences.

· Dance on Film (Oct. 3-14) - Our annual dance program kicks off with Rebels on Pointe, a laugh-out-loud-and surprisingly poignant-look at over 40 years of men in tutus. From there, it goes on to celebrate the wide world of dance, from Merce Cunningham's choreography to work inspired by Ingmar Bergman, and the origins of tap to an evening of shorts. Films and discussion for everyone to enjoy!

· Falsettos (Oct. 28) - Q&A Tony-winning director James and Tony-winning actor Christian Borle with moderator Dori Berinstein. Join us for a screening of the five-time Tony-nominated musical Falsettos, captured live during its 2016 revival. Directed by James Lapine and starring Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells, Stephanie J. Block, and Brandon Uranowitz, it tells the story of a gay man, his wife, lover, about-to-be-bar-mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and the lesbian couple next door in a profoundly funny and poignant look ata modern family. Life on the Stage: Conversation and Film is presented in partnership with The Actors Fund.

Other highlights of the fall season at the JBFC include:

· Oscar winner Michael Moore returns with a scathing look at our current political situation in Fahrenheit 11/9.

· The Old Man and the Gun stars Robert Redford as Forrest Tucker, a male who escaped from San Quentin at the age of 70 and went on a string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public.

· Love, Gilda is an enchanting documentary about the original SNL superstar, Gilda Radner, highlighting her struggles with success, fame, relationships, and ovarian cancer.

· Beautiful Boy is a deeply moving chronicle of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with the endless horrors of addiction through the oppositional lenses of a father and his troubled son.

· Boy Erased is based on the true story of a small-town teen forced to make the wrenching choice between his religious family and his authentic self. The star-studded cast includes Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and Lucas Hedges,

· Global Watch Crisis and Social Action Series

Sept 12: The Devil We Know

Global Watch is a year-round documentary series that untangles the stories behind the headlines, sheds light in dark corners, and highlights individuals who are working to make the world a better place. On Sept. 12, JBFC will screen The Devil We Know, a mesmerizing documentary that unravels one of the biggest environmental scandals of our time, as it follows a group of West Virginia citizens taking on a powerful corporation after they discover it has knowingly been dumping a toxic chemical - now found in the blood of 99.7% of Americans - into the drinking water supply.

· Retro Revival Series

Sept 12-Nov 19

This series represents the JBFC's renewed commitment to repertory programming, with a focus on rarely-screened titles and film projection. Each month, the JBFC presents re-mastered versions or high-quality prints of great films from the history of cinema. From Hollywood classics to more contemporary gems, Retro Revival gives moviegoers the opportunity to rediscover fantastic cinema on the big screen.

Films Include: The Big Chill (9/12), Andrei Rublev (9/20), The Producers (10/18 - 50th anniversary), When You Read This Letter (10/29), and The Deer Hunter (11/19 - 40th anniversary).

· World Stage on Screen Series

Sept 20-Dec 6

This series features the best of international theater and fine arts programming brought to the silver screen. This fall, guests can enjoy broadcasts of a unique selection of live performance recordings.

Films Include: An American in Paris - The Musical (9/20), NT Live's King Lear (9/27), NT Live's The Madness of King George (11/20), and NT Live's Antony & Cleopatra (12/6).

· Senior Afternoon Cinema Series

Year-Round

A new daytime series of outstanding older films programmed to appeal to senior moviegoers. Films screen at 1:00 on the first Tuesday of each month; Fall 2018 kicks off with An Education on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

· Community Matters: Local Issues, Discussion, Action Series

Sept 27

This one-night-only event will showcase Time for Ilhan, including a post-screening panel discussion with VoteRunLead CEO/founder Erin Vilardi moderated by Laura Rossi, followed by a reception. The film follows Ilhan Omar, a woman, Somali-American, hijab-wearing Muslim, and a candidate for elected office in Minnesota. Ilhan's unforgettable story of battling to make a difference in the face of bigotry, sexism, nativism, and personal SCANDAL is must-see viewing for anyone interested in changing the status quo and witnessing the RISE of a new political force.
