THE YELLOW WALLPAPER is a short film adaptation of the 1892 short story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The film is being created by Film and Television students at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) as their senior thesis film. Production will take place February 9, 10, and 11 of 2018 and post-production will last from March to May. The crew has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to create the film. The budget is $2,000 and will be used for building and dressing the set, printing the wallpaper, transportation, distortion lenses, and food for the cast and crew.
Although the original story takes place in the 1800s, this adaptation of "The Yellow Wallpaper" takes place in the 1960s. The story depicts a woman suffering from postpartum depression who is imprisoned in a converted nursery by her husband John, a physician who believes this course of action will improve her mental health. There is wallpaper in the room; a ghastly, yellow wallpaper that is torn in spots. The woman fixates on the wallpaper as her few sources of happiness are
TAKEN AWAY by her husband, which leads to her spiral into insanity.
Gilman's short story is one of the earliest feminist works. "The Yellow Wallpaper" sheds light on stigmas surrounding mental illness and the oppression of women. The ideas and issues explored in the story are timeless and were just as relevant in the 1960s as they are now.
The film is written and being created by Brooke Yunis and Amberly McMahon, two senior Film and Television students at SCAD. They met three years ago in a film class and instantly bonded as two of the only women in a 20-person class full of men and have been making films together ever since.
It is important to Brooke and Amberly to create and share "The Yellow Wallpaper" with the world, as the issues it addresses are issues our world needs to be having conversations about and invoking positive change. As women filmmakers, they want to provide more opportunities for women's voices to be heard: more women directors, writers, lead actresses, etc. More stories centered on women as the heroes and more stories that address issues relating to women are vital.
