The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended invitations to join the organization to 683 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.

Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2016. New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in the fall.

Following the #OscarsSoWhite controversy of last season's ceremony, the new class is 46 percent female and 41 percent people of color, featuring 283 new international members from 59 countries. If all of the new invitees join, the overall segment of women would increase to 27 percent and people of color to 11 percent.

Cheryl Boone Isaacs wrote in a statement: "This class continues our long-term commitment to welcoming extraordinary talent reflective of those working in film today. We encourage the larger creative community to open its doors wider, and create opportunities for anyone interested in working in this incredible and storied industry."
