Freestyle Releasing and Freestyle Digital Media (FDM) announced today that they have acquired theatrical and all DVD/VOD rights to JESUS PEOPLE, the improv-centered mockumentary-esque comedy from director Jason Naumann. The film features improv sensations Wendi McLendon-Covey (BRIDESMAIDS, ABC's "The Goldbergs"), Mindy Sterling (AUSTIN POWERS trilogy, "Desperate Housewives"), Jennifer Elise Cox (THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE, A VERY BRADY SEQUEL), Tim Bagley (THIS IS 40, KNOCKED UP), Laura Silverman ("Nurse Jackie," "The Sarah Silverman Program") and Academy Award-winner ™ Octavia Spencer (THE HELP). The film was produced and written by Dan Steadman & Rajeev Sigamoney ("The Captain") and is slated for a theatrical and VOD release on April 11th, 2014.

In the vein of great comedic mockumentaries like WAITING FOR GUFFMAN and BEST IN SHOW, comes JESUS PEOPLE, based on the hilarious and popular Independent Comedy Network web series. The story charts the rise and fall of America's worst Christian pop band, Cross My Heart. When Pastor Jerry (Joel McCrary from BEST IN SHOW) gets possibly awful medical news he is determined to reach his rebellious teen son while he still can. He finds four young musicians with varying levels of talent and their first single "Save The World" takes off on multiple (and some unexpected) radio formats just as the band starts to unravel.

FDM's Susan Jackson brokered the deal with the producer's rep Bill Vergos of Spy Filmz on behalf of the filmmakers.
"Jesus People is a hilarious film with great actors," said Jackson, "With the great cast and comedic genre, It is a perfect Freestyle Day & Date."
Recent Freestyle titles include Bottled Up with Melissa Leo, UNDERDOGS, with D.B. Sweeny and Natalie Imbruglia, TIGER EYES, the first big screen adaptation of a Judy Blume novel starring Willa Holland and the critically-acclaimed documentary Samsara from filmmakers Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson.
