Tonight, June 1 at 8pm, HBO will air 'I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale,' a documentary about actor John Cazale. Cazale appeared in 'The Godfather' (as Fredo Corleone), 'The Godfather: Part II,' 'The Conversation,' 'Dog Day Afternoon,' and 'The Deer Hunter.' The film will explore both Cazale's film credits and his background in the theater.
The documentary will feature clips from Cazale's movies, as well as photos and home movies. In addition, it will feature interviews with various Hollywood luminaries, both those who knew Cazale and those who were inspired by him. Celebrities include Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Robert De Niro, Richard Dreyfuss, Meryl Streep (who was engaged to Cazale at the time of his death at forty-two), Sidney Lumet, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, and producer Brett Ratner. Director-producer Richard Shephard and producer Stacey Reiss spent five years creating the film, seeking to pay tribute to and bestoy greater recognition on Cazale.
