Kramer was born in 1935 and has served as an advocate for both public health and gay rights. He is known by many to be fierce and quick to temper. For example, he was furious with Tony Kushner when Kushner didn't explore Lincoln's possible homosexuality in his screenplay for the movie titled Lincoln. However, many have also known him to be extremely kind and gentle. As actress Ellen Barkin says, "It's an amazing paradox."
The documentary plans to explore both sides of Kramer. It will begin with historical footage of him at a rally yelling and protesting like "a deranged messiah;" and, it will end with him happily exchanging marriage vows with his longtime partner, whom he married last year.
Kramer used playwright as a means of political activism. His plays often dealt with issues that he believed were very important. His plays include The Destiny of Me, Four Friends, Just Say No, and The Normal Heart.
