Gus Van Sant has made his first move in the bidding war to direct the film adaptation of 50 SHADES OF GREY.
According to The Wrap, Van Sant enlisted rising star Alex Pettyfer to shoot a "test" sex scene, in order to prove to Universal and Focus just how madly he wants the directing gig. The scene reportedly featured Anastasia Steele losing her virginity to ChristIan Grey, played by Pettyfer. Insiders refused to reveal who took on the role of Steele for the shoot.
Sources told the publication that Pettyfer was only hired for the test scene - not the film itself, despite the fact that he's been a fan-favorite to lead the bondage trilogy.

Universal Pictures and Focus Features acquired the rights to the three books in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" Trilogy in March of this year. Focus Features will market and distribute the first film in partnership with Universal. "Fifty Shades of Grey" has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in 45 languages worldwide since its release. In the U.S. alone, the "Fifty Shades" trilogy has sold over 32 million copies in e-book and print making it one of the fastest selling book series ever.
Van Sant most recently helmed PROMISED LAND, starring Matt Damon and John Krasinksi. He has also directed such films as GOOD WILL HUNTING, MILK, and PARIS, JE T'AIME.
