According to Deadline.com, George Clooney and Grant Heslov's Smokehouse and Sony Pictures are currently planning a feature length film based on the lives of comedians Tom and Dicky Smothers. The film will be based on David Bianculli's book entitled 'Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour'. Writers Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman are set to pen the script for the project, which will be produced by Clooney and Heslov. While Clooney may direct the film, no official announcement has been made.
'The Smother's Brothers Comedy Hour' ran on the CBS network from 1967 - 69. Although starting off as unassuming brothers who often bickered over trivial things, the comedians soon became known as 'trouble makers' as they began to infuse their liberal counterculture politics into the show. The writing staff of the comedy included Steve Martin and Rob Reiner. The show often invited controversial musical guests such as The Who, Jefferson Airplane and The Doors to perform. Ultimately, the sibling comedy team was booted off the air by CBS.
Partners Clooney and Heslove are currently considered Oscar contenders for 'The Ides of March' and Clooney is considered a frontrunner for Best Actor for 'The Descendants'.
