From Stage to Screen - Revisit Emmy-Nominated ALL THE WAY & LADY DAY

This year's impressive list of Emmy nominations boasts two Tony Award winners reprising their Broadway roles for the small screen. Multi-Emmy winner Bryan Cranston picked up an Emmy nom as Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie for his portrayal of President Lyndon B. Johnson in HBO's ALL THE WAY. The film has also received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Television Movie.

Six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald received a nod in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in HBO's LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL. The actress garnered her sixth Tony for her performance as the legendary singer on Broadway. Today, BWW looks back on both stellar performances adapted for television!

HBO'S ALL THE WAY

Bryan Cranston's Broadway debut in ALL THE WAY brought him Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theater World Awards, as well as a Tony Award. He has previously received three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Walter White on AMC's BREAKING BAD. His performance on the AMC drama also earned him a fourth Emmy nomination in 2013, a Television Critics Association award, two Golden Globe nominations and a Screen Actors Guild award.

The actor has won a total of six Emmy Awards and has earned 14 Emmy nominations, including nods for his portrayal of Hal in the FOX comedy MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE.

HBO's ALL THE WAY is a riveting behind-the-scenes look at President Lyndon B. Johnson's tumultuous first year in office as he takes the oath in the wake of President Kennedy's assassination, navigates the escalation of the Vietnam War and balances opposing interests to launch his landmark civil rights bill and win election to his first full presidential term.

In addition to the Tony Award, Schenkkan's play "All the Way" received Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, Drama Desk, National Theater Critics and Edward M. KENNEDY awards.

HBO'S LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL

Six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald received an Emmy nomination as Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in HBO's LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL. In 2015, the actress won her sixth Tony Award for her portrayal of the legendary singer.

McDonald previously picked up an Emmy Award in 2015 for Outstanding Special Class Program as Host of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (Live From Lincoln Center) on PBS. In 2008, she received an Emmy nomination for her role as Ruth Younger in ABC's "A Raisin In The Sun" and in 2001, she earned a nomination for her portrayal of Susie Monahan in HBO's "Wit."

Filmed before a live audience at Cafe Brasil in New Orleans, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill features McDonald in her history-making, tour de force performance as the jazz icon. Originally written for off-Broadway by Lanie Roberston in 1987, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill tells Holiday's LIFE STORY through the songs that made her famous, including "God Bless the Child," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," "Strange Fruit" and "Taint Nobody's Biz-ness." Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill is directed by Lonny Price, who also directed the Broadway production.
