Rising filmmaker/actress Molly Ratermann is heading to France with two short films she wrote, directed and stars in as part of two prestigious festivals: Nice International Filmmaker Festival and Cannes Short Film Corner.
Up first on May 16th, Ratermann hits the Nice IFF to screen her celebrated dark comedy SUICIDE, marking its 22nd festival appearance. The 28-minute film chronicles a narcissistic college dropout's desperate attempt to prove a point by dragging her worried best friend to the desert to commit a grand suicide. SUICIDE has garnered 17 awards on the festival circuit for its darkly comedic approach to suicide, the LGBT community and dynamic female characters.
Then on May 22nd, Ratermann will preview her new short film, LIZZIE LOST, as part of the Cannes Short Film Corner. The 10-minute film follows Lizzie, who after finally telling her best friend she is in love with her, must deal with rejection and isolation during a time when she is diagnosed with a life changing disease.
Produced under her Little Hand Productions banner, Ratermann was looking to shed light on some important social issues. Ratermann explains, "There are tough or controversial subjects like mental health, complex female characters and the LGBT community that I wanted to bring more awareness to but in a less intimidating manner. Growing up, my family always used comedy as a passive aggressive way to get our points across and, luckily, it works in film too."
Ratermann has been building a solid reputation as a multi-talent since hitting the festival circuit. Her skills in front of the camera have earned her 'Best Actress' awards at the LA Film Awards, Studio City Int. Film Festival, International Independent Film Festival, Indiefest, and the Actors Awards among others. Her performance in SUICIDE has been heralded as "organic, profound and touching" (Actors Awards) and "immediately humorous and lovable...10/10" (LA Film Awards).
Originally from the San Francisco Bay area, Ratermann trained in Los Angeles and New York at several renowned acting studios, including Seydways Studios, Upright Citizens Brigade and Beverly Hills Playhouse.
