Every Broadway Person in ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING

In terms of onscreen talent, Only Murders in the Building might be one of the most Broadway-heavy shows currently running on television. In addition to the plot and character-related Broadway connections (of which there are many), the Hulu series is filled with Broadway alums, ranging from performers to writers to fight coordinators.

Just in time for the fourth season, we compiled a list of the Broadway stars that appear across the first three seasons- and announced cast for the fourth- and how you might know them on the stage. We will update the list as new episodes continue to air.

Only Murders in the Building follows Charles, Oliver, and Mabel after an unexpected death occurs in their New York apartment building. The trio suspects murder and must employ their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, the three unravel the complex secrets of the building which stretch back years.

Broadway Actors in Only Murders in the Building

Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage)

Best known for his work on screen, Steve Martin also wrote a Tony Award-nominated musical. Bright Star, with book and music by Steve Martin, premiered on Broadway in 2016. In 2017, another Martin project was seen on Broadway- his play Materor Shower, starring Amy Schumer. 

Martin Short (Oliver Putnam)

Though Short plays a Broadway director in the series, the actor has appeared onstage in several productions including The Goodbye Girl, Little Me (for which he won a Tony), and his one-man show Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me.

Amy Ryan (Jan Bellows)

Amy Ryan has appeared in many Broadway plays including Uncle Vanya, The Women, and A Streetcar Named Desire. In 2024, she stepped into the role of Sister Aloysius in Doubt, performing the role on Broadway with very little notice. She was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance (her third.)

Adina Verson (Poppy White)

Verson originated the role of Rifkele in the Broadway production of Paula Vogel's Indecent. They have also worked Off-Broadway and in regional theater including The Ahmanson, the Guthrie Theatre, and Seattle Rep.

Julian Cihi (Tim Kono)

Cihi originated the role of Takeshi Kawabata in the Tony-winning play Take Me Out. He made his Broadway debut in 2015 in Doctor Zhivago.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Detective Donna Williams)

Randolph rose to prominence following her Tony-nominated turn as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost: The Musical. Onscreen, she appeared in Dolemite Is My Name, The Lost City, and The Holdovers, for which she won an Academy Award.

Meryl Streep (Loretta Durkin)

As the most Oscar-nominated actor of all time, Streep was also nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play for her performance in the double production of A Memory of Two Mondays and 27 Wagons Full of Cotton.  She has also been seen on Broadway in The Cherry Orchard and Happy End. Onscreen, she has appeared in numerous adaptations of award-winning plays and musicals including Doubt and Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods.

Paul Rudd (Ben Glenroy)

Rudd has appeared on Broadway in several productions including The Last Night of Ballyhoo, Twelfth Night, Three Days of Rain and Grace. In London, he performed alongside Jessica Lange in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night.

Tina Fey (Cinda Canning)

Though Fey hasn't performed on Broadway, the comedian wrote the book for the musical Mean Girls, which in turn was based on her screenplay for the 2004 comedy film. A film adaptation based on the stage show was released in 2024.

Jackie Hoffman (Uma Heller)

Hoffman originated the role of Prudy Pingleton in the acclaimed musical Hairspray. She also appeared in Xanadu, The Addams Family, On the Town, and Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 

Jayne Houdyshell (Bunny Folger)

Houdyshell has been in numerous Broadway productions over the years, including Wicked, Bye Bye Birdie, Follies, The Humans, The Music Man, and most recently, Uncle Vanya. She has received five Tony Award nominations, winning one for The Humans.

Nathan Lane (Teddy Dimas)

Nathan Lane is a staple in the Broadway community. made his Broadway debut in 1982 in Neil Coward's Present Laughter where he starred alongside George C. Scott. His other credits include Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Producers, The Frogs, and Angels in America. He has won three Tony Awards.

Cara Delevingne (Alice Banks)

Though Delevingne has yet to be seen on Broadway, the actress and model made her West End debut in 2024 as Sally Bowles in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.

James Caverly (Theo Dimas)

Caverly was seen on Broadway in the 2018 production of Children of a Lesser God. As a Deaf actor, he has appeared in several inclusive productions and performances of musicals such as The Music Man and Sweeney Todd.

Ryan Broussard (Will Putnam)

Broussard made his Broadway debut in 2022 as the understudy for Davey Battle and Darren Lemming. He formerly played in the Minor League Baseball league. 

Teddy Coluca (Lester)

Primarily a character actor in television, Coluca made his Broadway debut in 2007 as Chuck in The Ritz.

Jeena Yi (Amy Huang)

Yi appeared on Broadway in the 2018 of Network, led by Bryan Cranston.

Vanessa Aspillaga (Ursula)

In 2003, Aspillago made her Broadway debut in the role of Marela alongside Jimmy Smits in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna in the Tropics. In 2006 she played the role of Matilde alongside Jill Clayburgh and Blair Brown in Sarah Ruhl's The Clean House at Lincoln Center Theater.

Russell G. Jones (Dr. Grover Stanley)

Jones made his Broadway debut in 2018 in a production of George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan. He was an active member of LAByrinth Theater Company for over 20 years.

Daniel Oreskes (Marv)

Oreskes has appeared in numerous productions on Broadway including Electra, Aida, Billy Elliot, The Miracle Worker, and West Side Story.

Ali Stroker (Paulette)

In 2019, Stroker won a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway revival of Oklahoma! She was the first person to appear on Broadway as a wheelchair user. She also appeared in the 2015 revival of Spring Awakening.

Zainab Jah (Ndidi Idoko)

Jah has appeared on Broadway in Amazing Grace and Eclipsed. Along with other members of the cast, she won a Drama Desk award for her performance in School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play Off-Broadway.

Maullik Pancholy (Arnav)

Pancholy's Broadway credits include It's Only a Play and Grand Horizons. He also was seen in the 2022 Off-Broadway production of To My Girls.

Jane Lynch (Sass Pataki)

Though known for her television roles in shows like Glee and Two and a Half Men, Jane Lynch appeared in the 2012 revival of Annie, making her Broadway debut as Miss Hannigan. Most recently, she was seen alongside Beanie Feldstein in the 2022 revival of Funny Girl. She also appeared off-Broadway in Nora Ephron's play Love, Loss, and What I Wore.

Andrea Martin (Joy Payne)

Andrea Martin has appeared in a plethora of productions on Broadway including My Favorite Year, Candide, Young Frankenstein, Pippin, and Noises Off. She has been nominated for a Tony Award six times, winning two. She will next be seen in alongside Robert Downey Jr. in the play McNeal.

Jason Veasey (Jonathan Bridgecroft)

Veasey was last seen on Broadway in the production of A Strange Loop. He won an Obie Award in the original Playwrights Horizons production. Other credits include the Broadway and national touring companies of The Lion King.

Linda Emond (Donna DeMeo)

Emond has been nominated for three Tony Awards for her performances in Life (x) 3, Death of a Salesman, and Cabaret. She also appeared in the 1997 revival of 1776 as Abigail Adams.

Ashley Park (Kimber Min)

Making her Broadway debut in 2014 in Mamma Mia!, Ashley Park has gone on to appear in many significant Broadway productions including The King and I, Sunday in the Park With George, Mean Girls (for which she received a Tony nomination), and Grand Horizons. 

Jeremy Shamos (Dickie Glenroy)

Shamos' Broadway credits include Recklack, The Rivals, Clybourne Park, Glengarry Glen Ross, Noises Off, and Meteor Shower. He received a Tony nomination for his performance in Clybourne Park. He was recently seen in the off-Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Here We Are at The Shed.

Wesley Taylor (Clifford DeMeo)

On Broadway, Wesley Taylor most recently played the role of Plankton in SpongeBob SquarePants. Previously, he was seen in The Addams Family and Rock of Ages. In 2021, he appeared in the off-Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins.

Jesse Williams (Tobert)

Williams made his Broadway debut in 2022 as Darren Lemming in the play Take Me Out, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award.

Joel Waggoner (Tom)

Waggoner's stage credits include School of Rock and Be More Chill (Broadway) along with Souther Comfort (off-Broadway). He is also a composer and music arranger, working on Broadway Bounty Hunter.

Don Darryl Rivera (Bobo Malone)

Don Darryl Rivera played the role of Iago on Broadway in Disney's Aladdin. As a writer, he wrote the book of a musical adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon and co-wrote the book and music for Adventures With Spot, based on the books of the same name.

Allison Guinn (K.T.)

In 2009, Guinn made her Broadway debut in a revival of Hair. She also appeared in the 2014 revival of On the Town.

Adriane Lenox (Roberta Putnam- Season 1)

Though she only appeared briefly in Season 1 as the ex-wife of Oliver Putnam, Lenox has had a long career onstage appearing in Broadway productions such as Dreamgirls, Chicago, Kiss Me, Kate, Caroline, or Change, and Doubt. She has received two Tony nominations, winning one.

Sting (Self)

Appearing as a fictionalized version of himself in the series, real-life Sting wrote the 2014 Broadway musical The Last Ship, which was nominated for a Tony for Best Original Score.

Mandy Gonzalez (Silvia Mora)

Mandy Gonzalez has appeared in many Broadway shows including Dance of the Vampires, Aida, In the Heights, Wicked, and Hamilton. She will be playing Norma Desmond at select performances in the upcoming Broadway revival of Sunset Boulevard.

Everett Sobers (Little Lion)

Sobers performed the character of Ainsley at select performances in the recent Broadway production of the play Appropriate. 

Amy Schumer (Self)

Schumer made her Broadway debut in 2017 in the play Meteor Shower, written by Only Murders co-star Steve Martin. She was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance.

Shirley MacLaine (Leonora Folger)

Shirley MacLaine's Broadway career began in 1953 in the original production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Me and Juliet. The next year, she appeared in The Pajama Game and, the '70s and '80s, led musical extravaganzas of her own, fittingly titled Shirley MacLaine.

Noma Dumezweni (Maxine)

Dumezweni made her Broadway debut as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a role she reprised from the original West End production. She was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance. 

Peter Bartlett (Jerry Blau)

Peter Bartlett has appeared in a plethora of Broadway productions throughout his career, including Beauty and the Beast, The Frogs, She Loves Me, Cinderella, and, most recently, Mrs. Doubtfire. He was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his performance in The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told

Matthew Broderick (Self)

Matthew Broderick made his Broadway debut in 1983 as Eugene in the original production of Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs, a role he also reprised in Biloxi Blues. His musical credits include How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (for which he won a Tony Award), The Producers, and Nice Work if You Can Get It. 

Mel Brooks (Self)

Mel Brooks is the comedy legend behind musicals The Producers and Young Frankenstein, both of which were adapted from his films. He won two Tony Awards for his work on The Producers and is an EGOT winner for his many lauded contributions across mediums.

Desi Oakley (Ensemble #1)

Oakley made her Broadway debut in Wicked and has gone on to perform in productions of Les Misérables, Annie, and Chicago. She also wrote the original musical The Light Efect, which debuted in 2022.

Emilie Kouatchou (Ensemble #2)

Emilie Kouatchou performed the role of Christine Daaé on Broadway in The Phantom of the Opera.

Adam Hyndman (Ensemble #3)

Adam Hyndman has been involved in Broadway, both as a performer and producer. Onstage, he was seen in Once on This Island, Aladdin, and Hadestown and was a producer on The Inheritance, which won a Tony Award for Best Play.

Kelvin Moon Loh (Ensemble # 4)

Kelvin Moon Loh's Broadway credits include Side Show, The King and I, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Beetlejuice.

Alysha Deslorieux (Kiara)

On Broadway, Deslorieux has been seen in Sister Act, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Once on This Island, and Hamilton.

Jacob Ming-Trent (Lucien)

Ming-Trent's Broadway credits include Shrek the Musical and Hands on a Hardbody. He was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his performance in the off-Broadway play Merry Wives.

Marylouise Burke (Trixie)

Burke has appeared in Inherit the Wind, Into the Woods, Is He Dead?, Fish in the Dark, and True West. She has received three Drama Desk nominations, winning one for her performance in the off-Broadway play Fuddy Meers.

Sas Goldberg (Realtor)

On Broadway, Goldberg played the role of Kiki in Joshua Harmon's play Significant Other.

Ben Livingston (Charles' Father)

Ben Livingston has appeared on Broadway in Mamma Mia!, One Man, Two Guvnors, and The Heiress.

Lisa Kron (Casting Director)

Lisa Krone wrote the book and lyrics for the hit musical Fun Home, winning two Tony Awards for her work. She also wrote and starred in the Broadway production of her play Well.

Jonathan Burke (Waiter)

Burke's Broadway credits include Choir Boy and The Inheritance.

Meredith Holzman (Anita)

Holzman appeared on Broadway in 2012 in the revival of Death of a Salesman.

David T. Patterson (Jared McGregor)

David T. Patterson has appeared on Broadway in Les Liaisons Dangereuses and as the understudy for Nick in the recent revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Alex Vinh (Teenaged Concertgoer)

Vinh was most recently seen on Broadway in Kimberly Akimbo.

Jay Aubrey Jones (Usher)

Jones appeared in the original Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats and in the 1995 revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Matt Manuel (Clerk)

Matt Manuel played David Ruffin in Ain't Too Proud- The Life and Times of The Temptations.

Drew Leary (ESU Cop #1)

Leary is a stunt coordinator and performer who has served as a fight director for Next Fall and most recently for Stereophonic. He will provide the violence work in the upcoming Broadway production of Romeo + Juliet.

Martin Landry (Borgir)

Landry is currently performing on Broadway as an understanding in Oh, Mary!

June Ballinger (Mrs. Biddle)

June Ballinger appeared on Broadway in 1985 in the play Pack of Lies, which also starred Rosemary Harris.

Bret Shuford (Director)

Shuford has appeared in numerous Broadway productions over the years including Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Amazing Grace, and Wicked.

Ned Noynes (Frank)

Ned Noynes' Broadway credits include You Can't Take It With You and The Play That Goes Wrong.

Scott Robertson (Another White-Haired Actor)

Robertson has appeared on Broadway in the 1994 revival of Damn Yankees, the 1998 revival of Cabaret, and the revival of Rodgers and Hart's The Boys from Syracuse, among other credits.

Evan Zes (Investor #1)

Zes was most recently seen on Broadway in The Kite Runner.

Bob Ari (Becky's Dad)

Bob Ari's credits include The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Constant Wife, Frost/Nixon, and Act One.

Kathryn Boswell (Reporter)

Boswell has been seen in the 2015 revival of Gigi and Ahrens and Flaherty's Anatasia.

Rosharra Francis (Young Diahann Carroll)

Francis appeared in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

Seth Andrew Bridges (ESU Cop #1)

Bridges served as an assistant fight director in the short-lived 2020 revival of West Side Story.

Ashanti J'aria (Dr. Turbovsky)

J'Aria appeared in the Broadway tour of The Prom, as well as a cover of in Saturday Night Fever on Broadway as a Booth singer.

Molly Shannon (Bev Melon)

Known for her tenure on Saturday Night Live, Molly Shannon appeared on Broadway in the 2010 revival of Promises, Promises, replacing Katie Finneran in the role of Marge McDougall.

Jin Ha (Marshall Peepope)

Ha was seen in the 2017 revival of David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly and also played Aaron Burr in Hamilton on Broadway. He was recently seen in the off-Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Here We Are at The Shed.

Richard Kind (Vince Fish)

Richard Kind has appeared in numerous Broadway productions over the years, including Funny Girl, The Producers, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Big Knife (for which he won a Tony Award), and Kiss Me, Kate. He is also known as the voice of Bing Bong in Inside Out.

Melissa McCarthy 

Though she has yet to perform on a Broadway stage, McCarthy is an investor in Suffs, which is currently playing on Broadway.

Daphne Rubin-Vega (Inez)

Daphne Rubin-Vega played Mimi Marquez in the original Broadway production of Rent. Other Broadway credits include The Rocky Horror Show, Anna in the Tropics, Les Misérables, and A Streetcar Named Desire. She has been nominated for two Tony Awards.

Eric William Morris (Todd Shettinger)

Morris has appeared on Broadway in Coram Boy, Mamma Mia! and King Kong.

Bonus:

In Season 3 of the show, the characters produced a Broadway musical. Directed by Short's Oliver Putnum, the in-universe production featured new songs by the likes of Broadway alums Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and Sara Bareilles. 

Benj Pasek & Justin Paul

Pasek and Paul are the Tony Award-winning songwriters behind such shows as Dear Evan Hansen, Dogfight, and A Christmas Story. For the screen, they wrote songs for La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and Spirited. They have also written new songs for Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Snow White starring Rachel Zegler.

Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman

Shaiman and Wittman are the composer and lyricist team behind several award-winning musicals including Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Some Like It Hot. They also wrote songs for the musical television series Smash, which will hit Broadway in the Spring of 2025.

Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles wrote and appeared in the Broadway musical Waitress, which was nominated for Best Orignal Score at the Tony Awards. She also contributed to SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical and appeared in the 2022 revival of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods as the Baker's Wife.

Michael R. Jackson

Michael R. Jackson won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for his musical A Strange Loop, which premiered on Broadway in 2019. Two of his other musicals- White Girl in Danger and Teeth- have since been produced off-Broadway.

In the fourth season, the characters will spend some time in Los Angeles as an in-universe movie based on the podcast is being developed. At the same time, they attempt to uncover the apparent murder of Sazz Pataki, played by Jane Lynch, who was found dead in the finale of the third season. Season 4 premiered on Hulu on August 27.
