Entertainment One (eOne) announced today it has acquired the international television rights for the legal drama "Diggstown," and will handle distribution for the series outside of English-speaking Canada. The deal was brokered by Noel Hedges, eOne's EVP, Acquisitions, International Distribution.
Created by Floyd Kane (Across the Line), "Diggstown" follows Marcie Diggs (Vinessa Antoine), a star CORPORATE lawyer who reconsiders her career priorities after a family tragedy. Landing at a local legal aid office, Marcie is driven by one thing - to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system.
The team of lawyers that Marcie works with is a curious band of do-gooders, cynics and scrappers. They struggle to keep personal disappointment and demons out of their practice as they work directly in the community to find justice for their diverse clients, exploring issues of racism, poverty and gender bias. Henstridge plays Colleen MacDonald, a single, no-nonsense director of legal aid now headquartered in a small coastal city after being blacklisted by the legal community in the big city - where she hopes to return once again.
"Adding to our diverse and robust slate, Diggstown builds on our offering of distinctive episodic dramas featuring compelling characters and multifaceted storylines in a distinct and unique location," said Hedges.
"We are pleased to have eOne, a world class media company, as our partner on Diggstown. Noel and his team are the perfect fit for the brand of elevated episodic drama we're hoping to make," said Floyd Kane.
The series is currently in production and will be introduced to buyers at MIPCOM next month.
A CBC original drama, "Diggstown" is produced by Circle Blue Entertainment, Freddie Films Inc., and DHX Media. Floyd Kane is creator, executive producer and showrunner, and Amos Adetuyi (Across the Line) is executive producer with executive producers Brenda Greenberg and Todd Berger. For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Programming; Helen Asimakis is Senior Director, Scripted Content; and Deborah Nathan is Executive in Charge of Production.
