According to the NYTimes.com Ellen Degeneres has been chosen as the recipient of the 15th Annual Mark Twain Prize for Humor.

It was announced today that the popular talk-show host and stand-up comedian would receive the  award which is presented annually by The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington. In a press release, the Kennedy Center noted that the prize is given to “people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to” Mark Twain." Ms. DeGeneres will receive the award at a ceremony on October 22 that will be recorded for a later broadcast.

In a statement, David M. Rubenstein, the Kennedy Center chairman commented that Ms. DeGeneres was selected for “her special brand of humor” that “has allowed us to find hilarity in the mundane and has kept us laughing for years.”

Ms. DeGeneres responded to the news in a statement saying, “To get the same award that has been given to people like Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell, it really makes me wonder … why didn’t I get this sooner?”
