ELYSIUM Outdoes 'THE MILLERS,' Wins Weekend Box Office with $30.5 Million

Neil Blomkamp's ELYSIUM, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, battled its way to the top of the box office this weekend, taking in $30.5 million.
The film opened to $11.2 million on Friday, slightly undershooting Sony's initial projections. Blomkamp's 2009 hit DISTRICT 9 opened to $37.4 million, with around $14 million on its Friday debut.
WE'RE THE MILLERS took the no. 2 spot, earning $26.5 million after its Friday bow of $8.5 million. The film features Jason Sudiekis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, Will Poulter and Ed Helms, and follows a group of people who team up as a fake family to smuggle marijuana out of Mexico.
Disney's PLANES puttered into the third spot, grossing just over $22.5 million. The animated film, featuing the voice talent of Dane Cook as Dusty Crophopper, has outdone THE SMURFS 2 and TURBO at the box office, though its weekend take is on the low side for Disney.
The final new movie of the weekend, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS, based on the YA series by Rick Riordan and directed by Thor Freudenthal, drew in an additional $14.6 million, bumping its five-day total tp $23.4 million. The movie stars returning actors Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario.
Rounding out the top 5 was the Dezenl Washington and Mark Wahlberg-led action flick 2 GUNS, which earned another $11.1 million. It's two-week total now rests at $48.5 million.
