The third time's the charm?
With Sony officially rebooting its Spider-Man franchise, sans Andrew Garfield while integrating it within the Marvel Universe, Deadline reports that Drew Goddard is currently meeting with studio execs to write and direct the film. Goddard was previously attached to Sony's planned AMAZING SPIDER-MAN spinoff THE SINISTER SIX.
Per the report, Goddard has "got a meeting and there's optimism this will lead to a deal but that it's a bit premature."
Sony, which holds the license to make movies featuring Spider-Man, announced last month that it will bring the character to Disney and Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe. The web-slinging hero will initially make his debut in a Marvel film along with other heros before venturing out into his own feature, set to hit theaters on July 28. 2017. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and former Sony studio head Amy Pascal will co-produce the movie.
Feige previously said in a statement, "Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world's most beloved characters. Marvel's involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years."
Said Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger of the news, "Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world. We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building."
