"Room to Breathe," a documentary film exploring the benefits of mindfulness in the classroom, will broadcast nationally on PBS World Channel starting October 30, 2013 at 7 PM ET, with rebroadcasts through November 6, 2013.
A growing body of research is showing that social and emotional learning programs, including mindfulness, reduce anger and acting-out behavior, and improve attention, learning, and grades, as well as happiness and emotional self-regulation in the students involved in them. Cost-effective and easy to implement in a public school environment, social and emotional learning programs are quickly gaining ground in schools around the U.S. "Room to Breathe" highlights one such program, based on a practice called 'mindfulness,' implemented by an organization called Mindful Schools (www.mindfulschools.org) in several of the lowest-performing classrooms in the San Francisco Unified School District.
